Kubernetes As The Kernel For Data Center or Application Infrastructure Operating System

The last few months saw the emegence of industry standards on containers and container orchestration, leading to initiatives like Open Container Project and Cloud Native Computing Foundation. Red Hat’s OpenShift became the first application deployment platform on top of Docker based Containers and Kubernetes. There are many other vendors planning to offer platforms using Docker and Kubernetes. The momentum around Open Container Project and Kubernetes got me thinking about potential correlation to the other open source movement that completely reshaped enterprise IT, Linux Operating System. Though both belong to different technical categories, we can model the current platform landscape using … [Read More...]

When Open Source Foundation Makes Sense

Ever since open source took off in the enterprise market, we are seeing more and more vendors using open source as a marketing tool. One of the recent marketing strategies is to talk up the idea of open source foundations. Let me make it clear before I get beaten up on this statement. I am not saying that all the open source foundations are meaningless but I am arguing that more and more vendors are using the idea of a foundation as a way to gain open source credibility in today's enlightened world. There is nothing wrong with what they are doing. In a free market, anything is acceptable as long as it is not illegal. At the same time, free market works well when there is no information … [Read More...]

MBaaS and PaaS: Different Dance On The Same Data

For a long time I have been advocating that a good Platform as a Service offering should have MBaaS component. I have got push back from folks saying that it is not the case. I never argued that MBaaS is a feature of PaaS but it complements PaaS to make a complete application platform. There are some misconceptions that MBaaS abstracts away PaaS just like PaaS abstracts away IaaS. Rather, I see PaaS and MBaaS as peer services and together they make a good enterprise developer platform. MBaaS is fast becoming a hot market segment with more and more players jumping in to compete with upstarts like Parse, Kinvey, Appcelerator, etc.. Part of the reason for this boom is the mobile first … [Read More...]

Infrastructure for Modern Enterprises

May 21, 2014 by Krishnan Subramanian Leave a Comment

As I go about talking about my Modern Enterprise theme, people ask me about the role of infrastructure in the Modern Enterprise platform. Industry confusion about the role of PaaS Vs IaaS (even though PaaS is a distinct layer on top of IaaS) is one of the biggest reasons for this. Today I’m adding my […]

Modern Enterprise DNA Includes DevOps

May 7, 2014 by Krishnan Subramanian Leave a Comment

DevOps is all rage now and enterprises want to find out how to embrace DevOps in their organization. The buzzword nature of DevOps has lead to all kinds of marketing and false information around how organizations can embrace DevOps. It’s like Cloud Computing between 2008 and 2009. Everyone wants it but no one knows how […]

Containers Are the Foundation of Modern Enterprises

April 25, 2014 by Krishnan Subramanian Leave a Comment

Last week we had the Red Hat Summit in San Francisco where the talk of the town (ok, at least near Moscone Center) was containers. The clear message from the summit was that containers are key to future enterprise IT strategies. I am a big proponent of Docker since it was a new project released […]

Going Beyond Config Management Tools For DevOps

March 28, 2014 by Krishnan Subramanian Leave a Comment

Two weeks ago I wrote a blog post arguing that DevOps is not just about culture (which, of course, is at the heart of DevOps) but also about aligning the right tools with the culture. Even though I don’t claim a single prescription for handling DevOps, some felt I implied specific tools to be DevOps […]

Fortunately, DevOps Doesn’t Stop With Culture

March 11, 2014 by Krishnan Subramanian Leave a Comment

DevOps has become an important industry buzzword these days, because enterprises realize that their embrace of Modern Enterprise requires them to consider DevOps as a part of their strategy. There is lot of confusion in the industry about DevOps and it’s usually because of discussions based only on culture or the tools. We need to […]

Scaling Infrastructure Alone Doesn’t Maketh Platform

January 10, 2014 by Krishnan Subramanian Leave a Comment

Yesterday, on the Digital Nibbles Podcast, host and fellow Cloud pundit Reuven Cohen asked me why do we need PaaS when one can achieve automated scaling on IaaS services like Amazon Web Services. I thought I will do a short post answering this question as it seems to be a common question in the industry. […]
