Kubernetes As The Kernel For Data Center or Application Infrastructure Operating System

The last few months saw the emegence of industry standards on containers and container orchestration, leading to initiatives like Open Container Project and Cloud Native Computing Foundation. Red Hat’s OpenShift became the first application deployment platform on top of Docker based Containers and Kubernetes. There are many other vendors planning to offer platforms using Docker and Kubernetes. The momentum around Open Container Project and Kubernetes got me thinking about potential correlation to the other open source movement that completely reshaped enterprise IT, Linux Operating System. Though both belong to different technical categories, we can model the current platform landscape using … [Read More...]

When Open Source Foundation Makes Sense

Ever since open source took off in the enterprise market, we are seeing more and more vendors using open source as a marketing tool. One of the recent marketing strategies is to talk up the idea of open source foundations. Let me make it clear before I get beaten up on this statement. I am not saying that all the open source foundations are meaningless but I am arguing that more and more vendors are using the idea of a foundation as a way to gain open source credibility in today's enlightened world. There is nothing wrong with what they are doing. In a free market, anything is acceptable as long as it is not illegal. At the same time, free market works well when there is no information … [Read More...]

MBaaS and PaaS: Different Dance On The Same Data

For a long time I have been advocating that a good Platform as a Service offering should have MBaaS component. I have got push back from folks saying that it is not the case. I never argued that MBaaS is a feature of PaaS but it complements PaaS to make a complete application platform. There are some misconceptions that MBaaS abstracts away PaaS just like PaaS abstracts away IaaS. Rather, I see PaaS and MBaaS as peer services and together they make a good enterprise developer platform. MBaaS is fast becoming a hot market segment with more and more players jumping in to compete with upstarts like Parse, Kinvey, Appcelerator, etc.. Part of the reason for this boom is the mobile first … [Read More...]

Significance of OpenShift Price Reduction

November 11, 2013 by Krishnan Subramanian Leave a Comment

Today Red Hat (disclosure: Red Hat is my employer and I am working as Director, OpenShift strategy but this blog post is not representative of their views and this is my personal take) announced significant price cuts to their OpenShift Online service. They slashed down the price of gears by 50% in their silver plan […]

PaaS and DevOps: A Marriage of Seamless Collaboration

October 30, 2013 by Krishnan Subramanian Leave a Comment

PaaS and DevOps are much discussed topics these days in meetups and conferences around the world. The ambiguity around the very definition of DevOps is pushing people to wonder if there is any connection between DevOps and PaaS. I want to briefly touch on this topic in the hopes of generating a conversation on the […]

Think Big: Composable Enterprise and the need for Open Architecture

October 22, 2013 by Krishnan Subramanian Leave a Comment

As we move from traditional IT to a world of services, we are forced to rethink IT services in all layers of the stack, from infrastructure to higher order business functions. As enterprise IT moves to a service dominated world, open architecture becomes a critical part of IT thinking. In this post, I will briefly […]

Quick Note: Subset Compatibility != No Vendor Lock-in != Standards

October 4, 2013 by Krishnan Subramanian Leave a Comment

Recently I had a discussion on Twitter where some Pivotal employees claimed that Buildpacks removes vendor lock-in because it is used by both Heroku and CloudFoundry. As I argued in my post that standardization in PaaS only makes sense when it reduces or eliminates vendor lock-in, I beg to differ from their push that Buildpacks […]

Segmenting The PaaS Landscape: The S In PaaS

October 1, 2013 by Krishnan Subramanian Leave a Comment

At the recent JavaOne conference panel, Sacha Labourey of CloudBees positioned themselves as the S in PaaS to distinguish themselves with other platforms represented in the panel (OpenShift, CloudFoundry, etc.). I think it is an argument gone stale. Especially, with the twitter snark hat on, I would say 2008 called and wants its Service in […]

PaaS Standards: Standardize on what?

October 1, 2013 by Krishnan Subramanian Leave a Comment

Introduction Standardization is a natural process in any technological evolution and it helps enterprises in terms of quality control, repeatability, interoperability, etc.. As we move into the cloud based world, with large scale automation, standardization becomes even more important. Typically, open source makes standardization much easier. However, there is a strong belief in the industry […]

Infrastructure Scaling Does Not Equal Application Scaling

September 25, 2013 by Krishnan Subramanian 3 Comments

Yesterday, at JavaOne 2013, one of the panelist in the PaaS Faceoff panel was talking about scaling which I found troubling. It was a panel with OpenShift (Disclosure: I am a Red Hat employee), CloudBees, ActiveState and Pivotal CloudFoundry. While talking about the platform features, one of the panelists claimed application scaling as one of […]

The Importance Of Red Hat – Docker Partnership

September 19, 2013 by Krishnan Subramanian 1 Comment

Today Red Hat and dotCloud announced a technical partnership around Docker, the next-gen application container (disclosure: I am employed by Red Hat and was responsible for the initial meeting between these two companies to explore the technical collaboration. However, this is my personal opinion as an industry observer and it is not representative of Red […]
